Galveston Urban Ministries has Adult, Youth, and Children Programs that are in need of volunteers. Below is a list of all the programs that G.U.M. offers and how to get involved. Children After School Program Mentor
When: Monday through Thursday 3:30pm-5:30pm
What: Do you enjoy mentoring kids? Come join us and our Kindergarten through 4th-grade students as we help them with homework, engage them in fun bible lessons, and play great games!
What: We’re looking for volunteers to visit our kiddos at school during their lunch period. Our kiddos love surprise visits so they would love to see you!
Youth Reading Tutoring
When: Thursdays 5:30pm-6:30pm
What: Do you love helping kids learn to read? Come help our 5th through 7th graders improve their reading levels through one on one tutoring!
Youth Math Tutoring
When: Wednesdays 5:30pm-6:30pm
What: Do you love math? Do you love helping kids fall in love with math as well? Come help our 5th through 7th graders improve their reading levels through one on one tutoring!
Monday Night Youth
When: Mondays 6pm-8pm
What: Do you love connecting with students? Come join our 5th grade through high school students as they engage the scriptures in small groups, fellowship, and eat amazing food!
When: Thursdays from 6-9pm
What: We need volunteers to help take care of our participant's children while they attend the workshop!
Getting Ahead Mentor
When: Thursdays 6pm-9pm
What: We need individuals to walk beside and coach our neighbors as they learn how to overcome poverty
What: Do you have extra time on your hands and an affinity for cars or just general cleaning? Then why don’t you consider helping with our awesome GUM Fleet? We’re looking for capable individuals to help us keep our vehicles clean and running! If this is you let us know!
What: Do you love construction and demolition? G.U.M. is currently renovating a few properties in the North Broadway neighborhood and we're looking for people to lead or be part of a construction team. Projects will range from drywall and painting to building walls! So if you’re handy with hammer check out this volunteer opportunity!
What: Do you love working with your hands, making things grow? GUM has it’s own community garden and we’re always looking for green thumbs that don’t mind getting dirty! This is a great opportunity for you to work alongside some of our awesome neighbors helping promote healthy living in the community!
What: Are you a little OCD? Do you find cleaning therapeutic? We’re looking for talented people to help with cleaning our various offices and program spaces. This can be done at any time and would be a huge help!
When: Monday through Thursday, between the hours of 9am to 4pm
What: Do you have a talent for general office work like organizing files or typing up documents? Then come and be our Volunteer Admin! We’re always looking for someone to help us with the day to day tasks that helps GUM keep rolling!
When: Saturdays 10am-12pm
What: Do you like kids, parks, and the sunshine? Well, then this might be perfect for you! We’re looking for 4-6 groups to commit to doing Kid’s Club one Saturday a month. This is a great way to meet and connect with a variety of our neighborhood kids! Come join us at the Wright Cuney Park as we play, sing, and do fun bible lessons with 40 of our awesome North Broadway kids.
We’re looking for students that love GUM to be our on-campus recruiters by helping run Meet N’ Greets, attending organization nights with GUM Staff, and just be cheerleaders for GUM
What: Do you have free time and love shopping? Well, come and shop for G.U.M.! We’re always looking for people to help us prepare for our weekly programs by making runs to Walmart, Krogers, and other stores. You can even shop for GUM while you do your own shopping!
What: We’re always looking for people that have a knack for cooking! As a relational ministry, food is always a big way that we connect with our neighbors. This means we’re always looking for people to provide casseroles that can be frozen for events like Getting Ahead Program and the Youth Night as well as snacks for the Afterschool Program
