From Rescue to Recovery: A Galveston update after Hurricane Harvey

Hurricane Harvey dumped nearly 50 inches of rain in some parts of Galveston County earlier this week and is being called "the worst disaster in Texas history."

Galvestonians, all too familiar with the effects of hurricane winds and flooding, immediately began rescue efforts in our neighboring city of Dickinson and throughout the county.  

We are so proud of the way GUM staffers and other volunteers were among the first to brave the high waters to rescue women, children, men, and pets from the rising waters.  Countless thousands of rescues have been reported ~ hundreds of these can be credited to GUM's amazing team.

Christ Together Galveston, a group of local churches that work collectively for the betterment of our Island community, also quickly mobilized.  They collected supplies and established temporary shelters to house evacuees.  City employees, local businesses, nonprofits, and many Galvestonians joined the effort to provide basic needs, warm beds and comfort.  

Our Faith community worked tirelessly alongside others to meet the immediate needs caused by this catastrophic event.

Today, we turn our sights to recovery. While GUM buildings did not flood,  many of our friends and families were devastated.  We are working alongside neighbors digging out flooded homes and helping to meet the enormity of need.
